School & Holiday Camps (for any number of days)

Black Mountain Hideaway offers a fun and exciting opportunity for your children and gives them the ultimate feeling of freedom in a rich and natural environment.

The camps are up to one week, this can include treks and trail rides for all levels of riders up to 18 years old. We cater from 10 years old (for camps without parent or guardian present). We can teach a maximum of 20 students. Extra attention is paid to lessons in order to create the possibility to learn to ride properly and have good basic horsemanship skills within the selected period. We can tailor the camp to suit your particular outdoor activities programme, from preschool age on to adults. Suzie & Saxon are experienced and trustworthy with children & young people (Blue Card holders). Suzie is also very talented in sharing her knowledge and experience.

Black Mountain Hideaway offer various activities each day and expand your child’s knowledge of horses whilst having fun in a safe, well supervised environment where the potential risks associated with horse riding are minimized. Our equestrian centre adheres to the guidelines as per the industry code of practice.

One of the main activities is the horse riding lessons. These lessons are an ideal way to learn confidence, balance and co-ordination. Each activity is provided in accordance with a training plan which amongst other things includes grooming, saddling, ground control, natural horsemanship, walking, trotting and cantering in harmony with the horse, fun and games, swimming in the “crocodile free” creeks, learning bush skills while camping in the outback and scenic trail rides through outback, savannah and rainforest. At Black Mountain Hideaway we ride every day so children will learn how to ride a horse and will learn all aspects of horse management and care. At Black Mountain Hideaway, winters are mild; summers are cooler than the coast, tropical without humidity, as we are on the escarpment of the great Divide, cooling sea breezes abound, we have refreshing mountain streams, rivers and lagoons to swim in.

The purpose of these activities is not only to give your child more confidence (to control a horse, team association, etc), but also to gain skills, to learn responsibilities, and have new experiences and because of all this to enhance self-development.

Full Day Camps for beginner riders aged 7 to 18 years

Our 1 day beginner camps are suited to children with little or no horse riding experience. Students can look forward to learning the basics on how to approach, lead, tie up, brush, bridle, saddle, mount, ride and how to treat a horse with care in a safe proper way.
During the day students will receive aa hour riding lesson in the arena from Suzie who will teach ground control, walking and trotting, and depending on the ability of students, cantering in harmony with the horse. Next, students will have the opportunity to bring in practice what they have learned during a 1 ½ hour scenic guided trail ride.

Each child is required to bring their own food and drink for the day as well as sunscreen, hat and suitable riding attire. Costs for the 1 day camp will be $ 90 per child. The price includes horse riding and instruction. All riders need to arrive at 9.00 am and need to be picked up by 5.00 pm.

Day camps are held Monday to Friday at Black Mountain Hideaway commencing at 9 am and finishing at 5 pm.

Full Day Camp for intermediate riders aged 7 to 18 years to 80 years

Our 1 day intermediate camps are suited to children who are competent at horse riding and have an intermediate level of horse riding experience. Students need to be able to rise to the trot and canter on their own to participate. Depending on the ability and interests of riders, students will be offered 2 classes in hacking, basic dressage, bending poles and barrels, or an introduction to jumping. The day also includes horsemanship skills and a 2 hour scenic guided trail ride.

Each child is required to bring their own food and drink for the day as well as sunscreen, hat and suitable riding attire. Costs for the 1 day camp will be $ 90 per child. The price includes horse riding and instruction. All riders need to arrive at 9.00 am and be picked up by 5.00 pm. Overnight stays are free for those doing more than one day.

Special lessons and trailrides for children aged 4 to 8 years.

At Black Mountain Hideaway we offer special lessons and trailrides for the very young children aged 4 to 8 years. As we teach in very small groups of maximum four people, children will be accompanied with extra attention in order to create the possibility to learn horse riding at such a young age.

Suzie is experienced and trustworthy with children and is also very talented in sharing her knowledge and experience to young children. In addition all horses have been trained by herself especially for our trail & teaching centre which means that at Black Mountain Hideaway we have save, trustworthy and quiet horses ensuring that all risks are minimized in compliance with horse safe.

Costs: 1 hour + lesson $50

Trailrides (include lesson) for all ages.

Trailrides are available anytime, just phone for appointment. Saturdays and Sundays we also would be happy to welcome you and show you the beauty of the rainforests and the savannahs. Horse lessons preceding the trailrides are included.

For the beginning rider we offer a range of fully escorted quiet country rides. Designed for people with little or no experience with horses, these rides pass through picturesque Australian outback, savannah or rainforest. Of course we also have special designed trail rides for the more advanced rider too. Just let us know how long your ride should be and we can tailor your own adventure for you. For example you can start from a 1 hour trailride through the rainforest on the historical Bump track to a 2 hour trail through spectacular rainforest and savannah, view the Mowbray Valley, River and the Big Mowbray Falls from a cool 550 m above to the sea below. Also a 4 hour trail starting on the national trail to water Lilly Lagoons, have a picnic and go further on the stock route through the Australian Bush Savannah. Spot Brumbies in their natural environment and enjoy your views of the Great Barrier Reef from high mountain tops, all this is included within our options. Within these Trailrides Suzie helps you begin or further develop and extend your equestrian involvement. Everything is possible; just give Suzie a call for more options!
